Jaipur International Airport (IATA: JAIICAO: VIJP) is in the southern suburb of Sanganer, 13 km (8.1 mi) from Jaipur, the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan.

Jaipur airport is the only international airport in the state of Rajasthan. It was granted the status of international airport on 29 December 2005. The civil apron can accommodate 14 A320 aircraft and the new terminal building can handle up to 500 passengers at a time. There are plans to extend the runway to 12,000 ft (3,658 m) and expand the terminal building to accommodate 1,000 passengers per hour..The Ground Handling of all the international flights and non scheduled domestic as well as the international flights at this airport is taken care by Indo Thai Airport Management Services Pvt Ltd . Soon the complete domestic operations will also be taken care by them.

Structure

The new domestic terminal building at Jaipur Airport was inaugurated on 1 July 2009.[4][5] The new terminal has an area of 22,950 sqm, is made of glass and steel structure having modern passenger friendly facilities such as central heating system, central air conditioning, inline x-ray baggage inspection system integrated with the departure conveyor system, inclined arrival baggage claim carousels, escalators, public address system, flight information display system (FIDS), CCTV for surveillance, airport check-in counters with Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE), car parking, etc. The International Terminal Building has peak hour passenger handling capacity of 500 passengers and annual handling capacity of 4 lakhs.

The entrance gate, made of sandstone and Dholpur stones along with Rajasthani paintings on the walls, give tourists a glimpse of the Rajasthani culture. Two fountains on both sides of the terminal, dotted with palm trees, maintain normal temperature within the airport premises. The transparent side walls of the building have adjustable shades that control the passage of sunlight into the airport premises, thereby cutting down heavily on electricity bills.

Expansion Plans

There Are Plans for extending the length of the runway the airport from the current of 2,797 meters to 3,507 meters. The Airport would be partially close for 15 months starting from October 2011 to December 2012. The extensions are being done so as to make the runway suitable for landing of Boeing 747 and Airbus 380 so as to further increase international as well as domestic traffic . The new runway will be operational in 2013 with a Category II Instrumental Landing System(CAT II). Which will enable flights to land and take-off even during low visibility. The estimated cost of this overhaul project is Rs 85 crore. AAI, Jaipur has received Rs 70 crore for the project. The remaining is set for release in the near future. The airport authorities claimed that they have acquired the land required for the extension and said construction work will commence with the start of new winter roaster.As of october 2011 , it has been reported to postpone the expansion work till march 2012 .[6]

Cargo

The cargo terminal is adjacent to the old passenger terminal building, and has an area of approximately 700 square metres (7,500 sq ft). Cargo terminal facility is adjacent to main old terminal 1 building. Cargo facility is being provided by Rajasthan Small Scale Industries Co. Ltd., a public sector undertaking of Govt. of Rajasthan.
